Many people start their new diets by eliminating the breads and the pasta, hoping to lose weight quickly. I have said it before and I will say it again, eating an unbalanced diet is never good for you. A new research study has proven it.

The study took a group of women as they started dieting. All the women were tested for cognitive function, meaning short and long term memory, attention and spatial memory before they started restricting their diet. The entire group started with eliminating all the carbohydrates from their diet in the first week. They were tested again three days into the diet, and then after a week had passed, and again after two weeks. All of them showed a reduction in their cognitive or brain function!

In the second week of the diet, the women were allowed to add certain carbohydrates back into their diet such as fruits and whole grains. The reintroduction of carbohydrates brought the memory and attention scores almost back up to normal, pre-diet levels. There is a very simple explanation for this phenomenon.

Carbohydrates are basically long strings of glucose (sugar) molecules. When we consume them they are broken down into glucose, which serves to power our cells, including brain cells. Ask any student what they use to burn the midnight oil studying and you will probably hear about late night pizzas and potato chips. Glucose is the main fuel for our brain, and without it we have less efficient brain function. Other reported results of restricted carbohydrates include feelings of weakness and fatigue.rice Why Low Carb Diets Are Stupid

The government of Canada recommends that a healthy young adult requires between six to eight servings of grain products daily. One serving is described as one slice of bread, half a bagel, half a pita or tortilla, half a cup of rice bulgar or quinoa, half a cup of pasta or couscous, three quarters of a cup of hot cereal or thirty grams of cold cereal. The trick is to make your carbohydrates good ones. Choose the whole wheat option, like whole grain breads, brown rice, and whole wheat (not enriched white) pasta. Choose well and feed your body as well as your brain!
