<p>The study took a group of women as they started dieting. All the women were tested for cognitive function, meaning short and long term memory, attention and spatial memory before they started restricting their diet. The entire group started with eliminating all the carbohydrates from their diet in the first week. They were tested again three days into the diet, and then after a week had passed, and again after two weeks. All of them showed a reduction in their cognitive or brain function!</p>

<p>Carbohydrates are basically long strings of glucose (sugar) molecules. When we consume them they are broken down into glucose, which serves to power our cells, including brain cells. The trick is to make your carbohydrates good ones. Choose the whole wheat option, like whole grain breads, brown rice, and whole wheat (not enriched white) pasta. I have just come across some new evidence that shows links between <strong>diet and your mood</strong>. An Australian study has found that a low fat diet left participants in a better mood than a low carbohydrate diet.</p>

Participants remained on the diet for a year, and they were assessed for body weight, mood and well-being throughout the year and for a year after the diet ended. Both groups lost an average of over 30 pounds, and both showed an improvement in mood after the first 8 weeks. However, things changed after 8 weeks.</p>
<p>The low fat dieters maintained their improved mood after the 8 week mark, in contrast to the low carbohydrate dieters. Eight weeks into the study, the low carbohydrate dieters returned to where their mood had started before beginning the diet. This is despite the fact that they were losing weight, which generally raises mood in most people. The conclusion: low carbohydrate diets lower mood, even if weight loss is occurring. A possible explanation for these results, according to the study’s authors, is the difficulty of sticking to a low carb diet.</p>
<p>I do not disagree that a low carbohydrate diet is hard to maintain. It can lower your mental capability, as well as leave you depressed. Our environment is one of high carbohydrate intake and going against the norm can be extremely challenging. We are surrounded by bread and pasta, often in huge portions. However, if you think about it, both groups lost the same amount of weight. Thus, if we can lower our fat intake and consume healthier carbohydrates we should not only lose some weight, but also feel great about it.</p>

There is nothing wrong with eating fried foods for dinner in small amounts and in certain oils. However, there are 5 things that you should think about when you are deciding what to eat.</p>
<p><strong>1. Distinguish the good fats from the bad fats. </strong></p>
<p>The average person still doesn’t understand the fact that some fats are actually good for you. The types of fats you’ll want to avoid are saturated and trans fats, so check your labels. The type of fats that are good for you are called monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. These fats are what your body need and are found in sources such as fish, nuts, avocados, and soybean. They are also found in soybean oils and canola oils. Always remember that if you keep track of the calories you consume you don’t need to be concerned about the amount of fat you eat.
